On this two day tour we discover England's North East, visiting Yorkshire and its links with the Bronte sisters. We also journey up to Newcastle to Seven Stories, the national home of children's literature with its fascinating collection of exhibitions and original artwork.
The town of Haworth sits on a steep hill with a cobblestone main street. At the very top is the Parsonage where Patrick Bronte home schooled his children. Above that, on Penistone Moor, is the childhood land of Gondal and Angria. This is the make-believe world of the Bronte sisters where they would entertain themselves along with their brother Branwell. Their secluded upbringing and rather lonely early life let the girls imagination flourish and we can learn more about that in the Parsonage Museum as well as discover how they shaped and developed a career in literature that gave us such treasured works as Jane Ayre and Wuthering Heights. The delightful town of Haworth was used in the filming of 'The Railway Children', Edith Nesbit's famous children's book and there will be time to visit the railway station used extensively in the 1970 film. With its stone cottages and historic inns and restaurants and blessed with lovely views over the Yorkshire landscape Haworth is a perfect place for dinner (not included) before we travel to our overnight accommodation.
After breakfast on our second day we head to the vibrant city of Newcastle on the banks of the River Tyne to visit Seven Stories. Although a recent museum, the charity has built up an amazing collection of original writings and artwork from more recent children's authors including Philip Pullman and Judith Kerr. We will spend the first part of the day here before journeying southwards to the historic city of York, famous for its beautiful Minster containing over half of England's medieval stained glass. Here, among the ancient streets of a city the Romans called Eboracum, there is time for lunch and sightseeing before travelling back to London.
