London Panoramic and Royal Windsor - 1 day
This is a Weekly Trip
Combine a morning visit to the historic Royal castle at Windsor with a in-depth tour around the famous sites and not so well known corners of our awe inspiring and majestic capital city of London.
We begin with the short drive out of London's metro-land and into the green fields of Royal Berkshire, following the Thames to Runnymede, an important Saxon meeting place and historic settlement. Moreover, this wooded valley was witness to the conclusion of the Baron's revolt that gave us Magna Carta, for back in 1215 King John put his seal to one of this country's most important constitutions. Your guide will reveal the implications of this Great Charter and discuss whether history has been unkind to our 'bad King John' as the centuries have passed by. There will also be time to visit the John F Kennedy memorial standing on one acre of American soil (passports not required!!)
Following the Thames upstream we arrive at Windsor Castle, fortress to some, Royal home to others, this beautiful structure is rightly known as the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world. Walk amongst the lavishly furnished rooms of the Royal apartments and stand next to the burial plots of Kings and Queens in St Georges Chapel. Head down to the Lower Ward to see the changing of the guards (selected days only). Admire the views from the ramparts that stand high above Windsor town and its neighbour Eton, famed for its Public School founded in 1440.
After a break for lunch we head out via the pretty school town of Eton and back into London for a tour of this spectacular city. A chance to see some old favourites, Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Tower Bridge and St Paul's and then to come alongside some of our newer attractions, the London Eye, the Globe Theatre, the Millenium Bridge and the 'Gherkin'. By way of Buckingham Palace and St James's, we will have a guided drive past Trafalgar Square, Downing Street, Marble Arch, the Tower of London, travelling past the world famous museums, the Tate, the National Gallery, the British Museum and alongside the parks, Hyde, Green and St James's. Let's not forget the homes of the great writers and artists, the politicians and discoverers, the dwelling places of the exhalted or a rogues gallery of Londoners, temporary or long residing, famous or infamous.
Movie locations, theatre locations, Wartime destruction, Peace time construction, public innovations, public executions, lost buildings, lost rivers, Poets corner, Speaker's corner, Amen corner, the list goes on.....undoubtedly something for everyone.
