Portsmouth and Southsea - 1 day
Portsmouth and Southsea, a city of contrasts. In Portsmouth you have the premier base of the British Navy with its rich marine time heritage (a great thing to do in your free time is to visit the historic dock yard, home to HMS Victory, Nelson's flag ship and Henry VIII's Mary Rose). A short walk away brings you to Southsea, one of Victorian England's foremost seaside resorts with a lovely beach and award winning museums.
The guided walk will start outside the historic dock yards and your guide will give you a sample of what to expect, should you wish to visit them in your free time. You will then head over to Gunwharf Quays, a former naval base which has been transformed into a mixture of designer outlet shops, restaurants, pubs and bars (possibly something else for your free time) and then on to the highlight of your guided tour. The visit to Portsmouth's latest landmark, the Spinnaker tower which soars 170 metres into the sky, giving one of the best views in the country (on a clear day, over 20 miles). On your descent, the walking tour will continue down this cobbled streets of old Portsmouth with a stop to watch the movements in one of Europe's busiest harbours.
Finally, you will finish on the sea front of Southsea, just along from Southsea castle.
In your free time, the list of things to do is almost endless from the historic dock yards & Gunwharf Quays, a dozen of museums (including one dedicated to the D Day landings and another at the birth place of Charles Dickens), to the History of Southsea Castle. If you find that every high street in the UK is the same, then the Southsea shopping street may make a refreshing change!
