Warwick Castle, Shakespeare's Stratford with The Cotswolds and Blenheim Palace - 2 days

Bards, Battles and Baroque - Shakespeare‘s Stratford, Warwick Castle, Blenheim Palace and The Cotswolds

Heading north from London to the English Midlands we make our first stop at the medieval stronghold of  Warwick Castle. From the 11th century to more recent times the Earls of Warwick have played host to combat, siege and murder and the fortress itself has witness centuries of barbaric history. We will enjoy a guided introduction to the castle followed by a chance to relive some of its history courtesy of Madame Tussauds. Sights, sounds and smells are recreated in Kingmaker - A Preparation for Battle 1471 and a Victorian Royal Weekend 1898. See the dungeons and torture chamber and venture into the Ghost Tower if you dare. Enjoy the landscaped gardens by ’Capability’ Brown and watch the world’s largest catapult, the 18 metre high Trebuchet, in operation.

Following the Avon valley from Warwick town, we make the short journey downstream to nearby Stratford. This pleasant market town with timber-framed houses will be forever associated with the world’s greatest playwright, William Shakespeare. Our first visit will be to his mother’s farmhouse in Wilmcote village. Here, at Mary Arden’s house our guide will reveal how rural life and country ways formed a background to the writer’s works. Moving on to nearby Shottery we will spend time at Anne Hathaway’s cottage, Shakespeare’s wife’s childhood home and a beautiful thatched house in its own right. In the centre of Stratford we enjoy a fully guided tour of the town and visit Shakespeare’s Birthplace and Holy Trinity Church where the Bard is buried. It almost goes without saying that our day finishes in the most appropriate way, with an option of seeing Shakespeare’s work performed at one of the town’s theatres (theatre ticket not included in cost of tour).

The next morning we head out down the narrow country lanes of the Cotswolds, one of England’s most beautiful regions. Golden stone cottages, rolling hills grazed by sheep and meandering rivers crossed by ancient bridges are a prominent feature of this landscape. Our guided tour will take us to Chipping Campden, Broadway and Woodstock, finally arriving at the magnificent Blenheim Palace, one of England’s largest privately owned houses, seat of the Duke of Marlborough and birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. After a tour of the lavish interior there will be time to explore the grounds and lake. A short drive to the nearby village of Bladon gives us the chance to see the graves of Sir Winston and Lady Churchill before we finally make our way back to London.
