Professional guide for Colosseum & Roman Forum tour (maximum 18 people per guide)
Enjoy a cruise transfer with a tour of the Eternal City, delving into antiquity and visiting Rome's iconic and ancient sites such as the Colosseum, Via Sacra and the Roman Forum. Using smaller, luxury vehicles you will be offered a more personalised tour with vehicles that can go where larger buses are not permitted, allowing you to see more with less walking.
This service is available on all dates (April to November) when Royal Caribbean, NCL, Oceania, Princess & Celebrity are starting or ending a cruise at Civitavecchia.
After meeting your driver in the reception area/lobby of your hotel you will be taken to Oppian Hill. One of the famous seven hills of Rome and once the site of a former palace of Emperor Nero, we meet the guide and overlook the spectacular Colosseum. From here we descend to our special Skip the Line Special Access entrance to the Colosseum. Once inside, your expert guide will talk you through the bloody past of this amphitheatre with tales of gladiators, mock sea battles and executions. The enormity of it's size and the events that went on here is truly awe inspiring. Take a walk around the galleries, cast your mind back to a distant past, then look at the structure again and see how it resembles our modern sports stadiums.
After a photo stop at the Arch of Constantine, built in 312AD and an influence on many of the world's far later triumphal arches, you will be taken to Palatine Hill where the ruins of the Imperial Palace lie elevated above the Colosseum and here an uninterrupted view over the ancient remains of the city awaits. Look down upon the Roman Forum and Nero's Circus Maximus, a huge chariot racing stadium that could accommodate over 150,000 spectators.
The last stop on this tour is a walk along the Via Sacra (or Sacred Way), the main artery that linked the Colosseum to Capitoline Hill. It runs through the heart of the Roman Forum, passing the site of a wealth of important buildings and was used in the days of antiquity for a whole host of festivals and triumphal processions. Perhaps, most important of all is the site of the tomb of Julius Caesar in the Temple that bears his name, and where even today visitors lay flowers and offerings on the dusty stone that marks his resting place. After an absorbing and eye opening tour of Ancient Rome your guide will take you back to your luxury minivan, where your driver will be waiting to take you directly to your cruise ship.
Pick ups in Rome will begin at 08:15am. To make the booking process easier we have listed Rome hotels for you to select from when you book, however we will collect from all city centre hotels. Please do not worry if your hotel is not on the list but is Rome city centre. Simply select 'Hotel to be advised' from the list, then on page 2 of the booking process there is a box for additional information, add your hotel details here. We will then contact you prior to travel to confirm timings. If your hotel is not listed please email [email protected]. Central Rome pick ups are usually complete by 08:45am.
You must be ready for collection in the hotel reception area from the time stated on your e-ticket. We recommend you are ready 10 minutes before the stated time. On a small number of occasions we may alter the route/timings to ensure prompt arrival at the cruise terminal. This may be down to road closures, events in Rome etc etc. If we do amend the timings we will contact you in advance.
There are two major cruise terminals areas at Civitavecchia port, your driver will check where and will bring you just below your ship for the check-in. In normal circumstances you will arrive at Civitavecchia by 1:30pm/2:00pm. At Civitavecchia port you will be dropped off at your cruise terminal and walk straight to the check-in desk. Porters will take care of your luggage, ensuring it is delivered to your cabin. Make sure you use the luggage label in your cruise pack to facilitate this.

My chosen hotel is not on your list of pick up or drop off points, can I take this service?
We collect from the vast majority of Rome city centre hotels and Fiumicino airport hotels. Occasionally we are unable to pick up or drop off at certain hotels because they are not in Rome city centre, Fiumicino airport or not easily accessible by coach. Please email us at [email protected] and we will advise if we can collect/drop off at your hotel, or direct you to the closest pick up/drop off point.
Will I get to my ship on time?
Our Shore Excursions and Transfers are all designed for passengers going to and from the cruise ship. Our itineraries are based on the ships arrival and departure times. We would not offer an itinerary that did not allow passengers to get to their ship in time for its departure. Many ships will give allotted check in times, this is to help stagger passenger arrivals at the terminal and is more an indication of the earliest time they wish you to arrive. All of our tours aim to have passengers at the ship by 2:00pm. In the unlikely event of there being delays out of our control, such as traffic problems, we will liaise directly with the ships ground handling team and keep them updated on our progress and expected arrival time at the port.
How far in advance should I book?
Our tour dates go on sale 12-18 months in advance. We always advise booking early to avoid disappointment as availability cannot always be guaranteed if booking is left until closer to the date of travel. We offer a free cancellation policy up to 42 days prior to travel.
Should we tip our driver or guide?
Tips are entirely at the customer’s discretion and in no way expected. Should you feel inclined to tip, your driver or guide would be grateful, but you should not feel obliged. A 10% tip is considered customary.
I have sightseeing included in my transfer – do I need to book entry?
We have various options available, some with entry included and some where entry is an ‘Optional Extra’. If the entry is included this will be made clear on the itinerary page. Where entry is an ‘Optional Extra’ this will also be made clear on the itinerary, and the entries will be available to book in the ‘Book this Tour’ box when selecting your date, number of passengers etc. If entry is included or you have added it as extra then you do not need to contact the attraction and book entry. You will not need separate entry tickets to the attraction, the guide will manage your entry on the day. If you know you want to visit an attraction we always advise you add the tickets on at time of booking your transfer (if entry is optional). We cannot guarantee entry for passengers to the attractions that have not pre-booked and paid.
