An ideal trip for those already familiar with Rome is a delightful excursion to the hillside town of Tivoli with the breathtaking water gardens at Villa D'Este and the romantic Temple of Vesta perched at the edge of a gorge above the town. For many, it's wonderful side trip for visitors to Rome in it's own right. We transfer you from the cruise port to your hotel in Rome, with ample time to explore this historic part of the Lazio region of Italy, including a chance to sample both local food and wines as well as a morning tour of the UNESCO world heritage site of Villa D'Este.

Your driver/guide will be waiting for you at the cruise port, easily identified with contact number and sign with your name. Once you are settled aboard the vehicle we will drive out into the countryside towards Tivoli. The journey will take approximately two hours through undulating hills. vineyards and farms and upon arrival you will be taken to the tranquil water gardens at Villa D'Este to start your visit. Laid out at the height of the Renaissance, and built as a summer residence for Cardinal Ippolito D'Este, the spectacular gardens feature over 60 waterfalls and around 360 water jets. There are canals and cascades around every corner, ornate water spouts and a total of 51 fountains. One can only stand back and marvel at this beautifully crafted creation all intricately controlled by gravity from the garden's hillside location. The 16th century grounds also include box hedge gardens and delightful labyrinths along with grottos and statues. Wander from terrace to canal and from sculpture to mosaic, truly a serene and uplifting experience.

width=260Rejoining your guide, you will make the short drive to the famous Temple of Vesta, dedicated to the Roman goddess of family, and much loved by romantic artists such as Turner, it was an important stop while embarking on the Grand Tour. This temple dates from the First century AD and it's lofty perch at the edge of the town's acropolis has attracted artists and poets from the Romantic movement of the late 18th and early 19th century. Like the Pantheon in Rome, it's incorporation as a Christian church two hundred years after construction secured it's survival.

It will be here, right next to this ancient Roman temple and in the gardens of the Villa Gregoriana that you will visit the world famous Sibilla Restaurant to sample local cuisine and locally produced wines. Famed for it's stunning views and for being one of the oldest continuously operating restaurants in the world, one can try the gastronomic delights of the Lazio region while gazing over the river and it's waterfall, admiring the views of the town, and relaxing over a glass of vino rosso before your driver collects you for the journey to your hotel in Rome.
