We begin the day with a short comfort stop at the Cutty Sark, a glorious 19th century sailing ship. Enjoy a coffee (own expense) while your guide tells you of the cruicial role Greenwich has played throughout British history, before we leave London behind and follow the old Roman road to the historic city of Rochester. Upon arrival in Rochester, listen to the stories told by your guide of the sieges and bloody battles through the ages, before admiring Rochester's 900 year old castle, the 11th Century cathedral, and taking a walk down Rochester's quaint high street, a place frequented by Charles Dickens. After some time exploring in Rochester, we use our our minicoach to our advantage, and take you down local back roads and country lanes that big buses cannot manage, right to the edge of England.
We'll then travel down leafy lanes through the Kent countryside, seeing hop fields, farmlands, orchards, oast houses and characterful villages which gives Kent the 'Garden of England' nickname that it is so well known for. We’ll make a photo stop in the beautiful village of Chilham, centred around a square with a traditional English pub, manor house and 15th century church before we continue onward to the White Cliffs of Dover.
Admire the world renowned White Cliffs of Dover, so famous for their symbolism in British and allied military history, and where you'll be able to see the coast of France on a clear day, lying just 20 miles away! After a short drive from the White Cliffs, we'll arrive at Dover Castle, where you'll have the option of entering the Castle for a couple of hours to explore. Should you choose to enter the Castle (entry is not included) stroll around the castle grounds, climb the tower, walk the walls and learn about Dover Castle's integral role in battles from the 11th Century, all the way up to WWII, before we journey onwards to Canterbury.
Upon arrival in Canterbury, walk along cobbled streets into the heart of the city, where you'll have a couple of hours free time to have a look around, and visit the vast, historic and stunning Cathedral if you wish. We'll provide you with maps and recommendations to get the most out of your time. Later, join your guide on a walking tour and learn more of the history of Canterbury, tales of its visitors, and discover some hidden secrets and passageways before we head back to London.
