The spectacular and ancient Kingdom of Wessex is our destination as we drive through rolling chalk hills to Stonehenge, this ancient arrangement of complex stone circles and crescents has left historians and archeologists debating for years. Is it a clock, calendar or place of the dead? We learn of what is known and what may never be known as we enjoy our guided visit to the site. There's plenty of time to see the new exhibition centre and take those all important photographs of this iconic place. We then head South explore the earliest known site of the town of Salisbury, the hill fort at Old Sarum. Here we find layer upon layer of history, Celtic, Roman, Saxon and Norman.
After exploring the castle ruins and admiring the delightful views over the surrounding countryside, a short drive takes us to Salisbury itself with its impressive cathedral built from 1220 to 1258 when the Old Sarum site was abandoned. Here we can marvel at the 404ft high spire, the tallest in the country and see a 1215 original copy of Magna Carta, England's only major constitution. After a guided tour and a break for lunch we head up to Avebury, passing mysterious chalk hill figures carved in to the landscape, ancient burial chambers, some older than Stonehenge, and Silbury Hill, Europe's tallest prehistoric monument, a 130ft high pyramid, its purpose still open to debate.
We end the day at the huge complex of stone circles at Avebury with its pretty village of thatched cottages nestling right in the middle. Enjoy a guided walk and some free time before our return to London.
