Journey through England's spectacular countryside on this small group day tour from London. We'll visit mysterious Stonehenge to unlock the secrets of this prehistoric stone circle, continuing on to the elegant city of Bath with its beautiful terraces and squares, amazing Roman ruins and hot springs. We then journey down narrow lanes through the charming countryside and the Mediaeval village of Lacock for a guided walk. Our day trip from London ends with a visit to the spectacular stone circle at Avebury.

Itinerary

Stonehenge
Our small group day trip from London begins with an escape from the city to rural Wiltshire, where high on the chalk uplands of Ancient Wessex we find enigmatic Stonehenge. As we travel to this awe-inspiring site our guide will illustrate the known facts and discuss the ever-changing theories connected to the monument. We head up to the circle itself and during our guided tour we learn of the different periods of building, some stretching back 5,000 years, we learn of the people that worshipped here and the various ideas of its alignments and purpose. There is a chance to experience the visitor centre and exhibition before we continue our journey westwards to Bath.
 
Bath
Visitors have been visiting Bath for centuries, owing to the hot springs that bubble up to the surface at several locations in the city. At a constant temperature of 46.5C, the only warm springs in the country, it isn't surprising that the Romans developed their resort of Aqua Sulis here 2,000 years ago. The city was beautifully re-invented in the 18th century when it became the fashionable place to see and be seen. Elegant crescents, squares and terraces were built as the rich and famous travelled from London for 'the season' and to take the waters in the hope that it would cure gout, rheumatic pain and stiffness of the joints. See the Roman Temple, and original Roman pavement. Take some time for lunch (own expense) in one of the elegant tea rooms, and try a famous Sally Lunn bread bun. Explore 18th century crescents and squares of the Georgian city, built 250 years ago when Bath became the social centre for high society with dancing, bathing and all manner of relaxation.
 
Lacock
We then drive up into the limestone hills for a scenic country journey stopping in the Medieval village of Lacock, now owned by the National Trust and full of beautiful cottages and narrow streets which our smaller vehicle is able to navigate. This picture-perfect place boasts an ancient barn, old village lock-up and 15th century church. Due to the large number of old and beautiful cottages here, Lacock has been used as a backdrop for many TV and film productions such as Harry Potter, Cranford, Pride and Prejudice and the recent Downton Abbey movie.
 
Avebury
After our tour of Lacock, we'll continue to Avebury, a pretty village of thatched cottages nestling in the middle of a huge circle of ancient stones. Beautifully unique, the stone circle here is over fourteen times larger than its more famous neighbour, Stonehenge. Enjoy a guided walk around the mysterious standing stones and some free time to explore the attractive village before our small group day trip ends, and we return to London.

Please note that all timings above are estimated and assuming normal traffic conditions. Due to the changeable nature of road conditions, we cannot guarantee a precise time when you will get back to London, it is usually between 6-7pm.

On the return to London your driver will drop you at Victoria Train Station in the city centre. This is one of the largest transport stations in London, with excellent connections to all parts of London and beyond.

Helpful Information about the day of your Tour

Stonehenge, Bath, Lacock & Avebury

  • Are the meeting points easy to find? 

    • YES! All are within short walking distances of tube and bus stops, and very easy access for taxis. We recommend you arrive at the meeting point 10 minutes before the departure time. Your International Friends day trip has been carefully planned to ensure maximum enjoyment, which sadly means we cannot delay our departure times to wait for latecomers. This would impact the day's itinerary and could mean we miss booked entry times at certain attractions. If you are running late please phone the emergency number and our team will help you. If you miss the departure for your tour, you are welcome to join the tour at the first scheduled stop. Any expenses incurred in doing so will be at your own expense. Refunds cannot be issued for passengers who miss their tours departure through lateness.

  • How will I identify the International Friends vehicle at the meeting point? 

    • Depending on the number of people travelling on a particular day we use 8 or 16 seater executive vehicles. On arrival at the pick up location the guide/driver will announce themselves, will be holding a sign reading “International Friends” and will be aware of your names ready to welcome you on board.

  • How much time will I have at each sightseeing stop? 

    • Stonehenge - Approximately 1 hour 10 minutes. This tour is planned to get to Stonehenge first, before the large coaches, missing the queues and crowds!
    • Bath - We will spend approximately 2 hours in Bath enjoying a coach panoramic tour of the city and time to enter the Roman Baths.
    • Lacock - Our journey from Bath takes us through the beautiful Cotswolds. Our stop is in Lacock and is for approximately 45 minutes. 
    • Avebury - Last stop of the day. We spend approximately 20 minutes getting up close to the Avebury Stone Circle.

  • Are entries into the attractions included in my ticket price? 

    • This tour includes entry into Stonehenge & the Roman Baths.
    • The Stonehenge audio guide is a popular way of learning more about Stonehenge and its builders. You can download the audio guide free in advance or while you're on site. The audio guide is available in twelve languages and offers a guide to the stone circle, the Stonehenge landscape and the exhibition. Please search Stonehenge Audio Tour in your App store. We recommend you take your own headphones.

  • Should I bring swimwear for visiting the Roman Baths? 

    • A surprisingly common question, you’re not alone wondering this! However, the Roman Baths have long since stopped allowing people to bathe there (approximately 2000 years in fact!) and is now just a museum, so no, swimwear is not needed.

  • Will we be able to touch the stones at Stonehenge & Avebury stone circles? 

    • Avebury is the largest megalithic stone circle in the world, thought to have been built between 2850BC and 2200BC. Here you will have time to wander in and out of the Stones, touching and feeling them.
    • Stonehenge has been awarded World Heritage status and is strictly protected. You will be able to walk the full parameter of the stones but sadly will not be able to touch them.

  • Is food and drink included in my tour? 

    • Food and drink is not included. There will be opportunities to buy food whilst touring. To maximise time spent sightseeing you are welcome to bring a packed lunch with you.

  • Can I bring food and drink onboard the vehicle?

    • There is to be NO Hot Food or Beverages (exception if hot beverage is in a sealed reusable thermal cup) on board the coaches due to the risk of scalds or burns and smells remaining on board the vehicle. Only Cold food & beverages with screw top lids are to be taken on board any vehicle. All litter must be taken from the vehicle and disposed of appropriately.

  • How much walking is involved in this tour? 

    • Stonehenge - The main visitor areas are all on flat ground and are well pathed. A shuttle bus service will take you from the visitor centre directly up to the Stones.
    • Bath - A short walk from the coach drop off point to the Roman Baths, typically takes between 15 – 20 minutes. Some parts of Bath have cobbled pavements which may be difficult for those with walking difficulties.
    • Lacock - Lacock - Very limited walking, a photo stop.
    • Avebury - Very limited walking in a field in and around the Stone Circle.

  • What should I wear?

    • British weather can be variable and so guests are advised to check the weather forecast and dress appropriately. It is recommended to bring some warm clothes with you especially in the winter months and layers are good for adapting to the ever-changing weather conditions. It is a good idea to wear appropriate footwear as there is walking involved on our tours. England is known for its rain so it is advisable to bring a waterproof jacket or umbrella with you. 

  • How many people will be joining this tour? 

    • This is one of our Small & Friendly day trips with a maximum 16 people.

  • Do we need to tip staff? 

    • Tips are entirely at the customer’s discretion and in no way expected. Should you feel inclined to tip, your driver or guide would be grateful, but you should not feel obliged. A 10% tip is considered customary in the UK.

  • What time do we arrive back in London?

    • We aim to arrive back in London at approximately 6:30pm. Please note all timings are estimated, assuming normal traffic conditions. On your return to London your driver will drop you at Victoria Train Station in the city centre, one of the largest transport stations in London, with excellent connections to all parts of London and beyond.
