Stonehenge
We head west into the rolling hills and chalk down lands of Wessex, a land of burial mounds and Stone Age settlements. High up on Salisbury Plain stands the greatest Neolithic monument of all, the prehistoric circle of Stonehenge. As we drive towards the area, we will learn of the building methods used to create Stonehenge, and the possible purposes, whilst your guide will discuss what is known and may never be known about this ancient monument. We will then spend some time exploring Stonehenge and the visitor centre with an audio guide. Step inside the Neolithic Houses, see how people lived 4500 years ago!
Bath
We then head further westwards, passing villages of flint and thatch down towards the World Heritage city of Bath, home to the only hot springs in the country. Hot water bubbles up to the surface every day, which throughout history has attracted both the Celts and the Romans, with the Romans turning the city into a premier resort in the First Century AD. Later, in the 18th Century, the city was revived by the Georgians. Bath became a place to see and be seen, with a chance for the elite to rid themselves of stiffness in the joints caused by arthritis and gout in the hot springs. The town was blessed with elegant Georgian crescents, terraces and squares, most of which still stand today. Bath became home to Jane Austen, Thomas Gainsborough, Lord Nelson, Alexander Pope and Napoleon III.
