The city of Canterbury is the cradle of Anglican Christianity, constantly inhabited since the days of the ancient Britons, it was an important Roman staging post on the route to London following the military road known as Watling Street. The most significant historical era was when the future St Augustine chose Canterbury as the site to reintroduce Christianity to Saxon England. The Archbishop of Canterbury is the primate of the Anglican Church and the imposing cathedral rightly stands out as one of the worlds greatest churches. First built of stone after the Norman Conquest, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Included in your day trip is a guided walking tour of Canterbury, where your experienced tour guide will reveal to you that Canterbury has much more to offer than just the cathedral. You will see the ruins of the Norman castle, take a walk along the ancient city walls dating back to Roman times, view the hospital of St Thomas the Martyr, the idyllic River Stour, the fortified Westgate Towers, formally a prison, and the medieval buttermarket before your guide takes you into Canterbury Cathedral (admission included).
After exploring the cathedral you will have free time for lunch, gift shopping in one of the many boutique shops lining the cobbled streets, or a chance to explore the sights seen on the walking tour. There will also be time to head outside the city walls to see the ruined St Augustine's Abbey and ancient St Martin's, England's oldest parish church.
